Facebook, Librarians, Embrace it !
If you were to call me the 2nd generation of librarians, I don’t really mind. Social sites has been introduced to be back in October, 2003, I found it as an interesting tool to discover what my friends are actually doing for a living. I was in the military then, lost from the outside world. But, Friendster brought me a new way of keep in touch with my friends.
3 years later, Facebook was introduced. A difference set of ball game. Lately, many experience librarians has approached me asking should we build application within the Facebook domain and allow our students to us. For example, build the presence of my academic library in the Facebook.
Hazman : Why not? It is not harm having a profile in Facebook.
Librarians: Then, we will be more work and time consuming to maintain services at each point of sites.
Hazman: Nope. If you understand the theory of IT and operation to align strategically on par. With carefully planning and execution, having a presence in Facebook will benefit a little success. Such as contributing the presence of users coming to your main portal page.
Librarians: How? We still don’t understand.
Hazman: Yup, a lot of library managers complains we have lack of manpower and financial constraint. But, isn’t that part of living to survive on this earth. We should start to think out of the box, be creative to solve the situation.
For example, embrace the technology. If I were to be the team leader of the library, I will tell my embrace. Only through embracing you learn fast and rise the interest to further on your passion. Facebook is a great tool for marketing your product. For example, share it. If you were to used it properly, indirectly you are using it a tool to market you services.
And if you were planning to build plugin for Facebook, ensure smoooth intergration is done there.
Gerry McKiernanfind out that a total of 23% of respondents stated that ‘yes’ or ‘maybe’ they would be interested in contacting a librarian via these two social networking sites. While, QQlibrarian raised on a grapple with manpower shortages and budget constraints like many other libraries in the world.
A young punk, I let you guys ponder about. I am pretty sure the youngers have a difference mindset of thinking.
