Posted by Hazman Aziz On August - 15 - 2009Comments Off

Miss Singapore World: from Normal stream to NTU Dean’s List
TNP (14 Sep 08, Pg 8-9) and SMDN (14 Sep 08 Pg 3) featured Ms Faraliza Tan, the reigning Miss Singapore World and a Communication Studies undergraduate student at NTU’s Wee Kim Wee SCI. The report noted that Faraliza has been on the Dean’s List for three consecutive years since 2005, which means she is in the top 5 percent of the cohort. She was once a Normal (Academic) student who worked hard and was eventually transferred to the Express Stream at the end of Secondary One. She aspires to work in broadcast journalism or programme acquisition one day. She has recently completed her six-month professional internship at MTV Asia, where she assisted with the allocation of shows to suitable time-slots, and doubled as an award-presenter during the MTV Asia Awards. She shared that she joined the Miss Singapore World pageant to overcome the insecurity she felt about her looks and to boost her self-confidence.

Should not be a librarian anymore

Posted by Hazman Aziz On August - 15 - 2009Comments Off

This actually reminds me on of a posting on Channelnewasia.com about, “Survey shows Gen Y S’poreans tend to job-hop, prefer younger supervisors”. Let’s me summaries:

SINGAPORE : … According to its recent survey, 7 in 10 Generation Y workers aged between 19 and 30 think it is normal to job-hop, and they also want instant recognition for their work.

… The survey also revealed that Generation Y workers prefer younger supervisors who are aged 40 and below, and they expect them to be open minded, understanding and easy to get along with…

…The institute said companies should review their existing HR practices and adopt more flexible policies for this group of workers. – CNA /ls

And, come to thinking again, the statement report is true. But, if I am to move on, what is my next career choices. By end of September this year, I have been working exactly 2 years in an academic library. And, what are the projects that I have been involved between 2006 to 2008:

  • administrating and building of library blogs (for business, engineering, facilities planning, and Chinese library)

  • development of a knowledge syndication widget between the FAQ system and other micro sites of the library
  • building the collection development of IT & Operations management
  • consultation on IT & Operations Management resources
  • enhancing library desktop usability & service dimension
  • development of bookmarklet’s snippet codes
  • administrating Library’s e-form & survey system
  • coordination of Library’s media campus broadcast channel – ChannelNTU

managed to present a couple of presentation such as;

Ramadan: What Does It Means To Us In A Knowledge Society

Posted by Hazman Aziz On August - 15 - 2009Comments Off

A lot of us did not really recognise that Ramadan is also can be label as a the month of the knowledge society. Within this month, a number of historical events has happened across every society, just for the piece of knowledge to be share and mobilised. I used to share a piece of entry in this blog about, “Ramadan Builds Resilient Youths.”

A number of us were actually unaware of a number of events of Ramadan that have happened. Most of all the Kitab of Allah (Lord) came down to man during this holy month. From Kitab that was given to Prophet Moses, Prophet David and Prophet Isa all came coincidentally in the month of Ramadan and also in a sequential date, starting from the 8th or 9th Ramadan. This is an act of knowledge mobilisation from Lord to his slaves.

Frankly, I don’t have the hard facts on this to argue or justify that these dates are correct. But the act between the first mobilisation of knowledge marks a great symbol in the history of society. A simple book (Kitab) which was given to us, was documented and till today we are still referring and reading it as a life and faith reference. If any of you guys happened to read this posting and awareness what I am trying to justify (or even have the dates of event such as when the Kitab are brought down), please share it with me.

So far, as a Muslim, Laylat al-Qadr literally the “Night of Decrees” or “Night of Measures”, is the anniversary of two very important dates in Islam that occurred in the month of Ramadan. This is one events that I have been hearing and aware off since I was a youth.

Muslims believe that it was the night in which the Qur’an was revealed from God. The Qur’an is one of the holy Kitab and the last Kitab that was given to man. The Qur’an was revealed over many years to the Prophet. That is Prophet Mohammad, and no other Prophet after him.

Muslims believe that any acts of worship undertaken on this night are rewarded in multiple thousands in comparison to the same act of worship done on any other day. There are two schools of thought on date of this event. Some Muslims are of the opinion that it lands on the 27th night of Ramadan while others believe that it may be any one of the last odd nights.

What actually happen on this “Night of Measures” was a miracle and some even said, it was a glimpse of the future (the World today). Prophet flew from Mecca to Jerusalem, within 1 single night, in a transport. Today, we are also able to do that. And, He was lifted up to the sky. Today, we are also able to do that. In terms of measuring the knowledge mobilisation here, many theories can be drive.

  • Can human be transported one city to another in less than a night?
  • What about from earth to the sky?
  • The knowledge that he attained from Lord and pass back to human?

All of these are being discuss through exploitation of knowledge. Knowledge that is documented and passed from one generation to another, puting the information still in tact. Plus a strong justification from the holy book. If we were to match in again in the theory, I don’t see why Ramadan unable to “Builds Resilient Youths.”

Truly, the youths are the hope for the future. Their success would mean success for us all, and should they not succeed, it also means we all do not succeed.

Revently a Youth Minister shares this note in one of the social site describing on a event, “… It’s not just a matter of medals. Every athlete represents a story of hope, determination, guts, effort and sacrifice in a very real way. Win or lose, I have not seen a single athlete look beaten or sorry for herself.”

If we were to related these elements (1) youth, (ii) knowledge, (iii) hope, (iv) determination (v) guts (vi) effort and (v) sacrifice, it actually build the foundation of a knowledge mobilisation. Wow, this is great. Maybe, I will trying to proof this in one of my thesis theory where these actually play a part to the perceived of useful and perceive ease of use in the concept of knowledge mobilisation, where desirability will be the results.

Well for now, I rest assure everything first in my faith. Tomorrow will a great day to start.
