User Interaction Issues in Wikipedia

A couple of things that I need to touch up on this paper. A number of us are still wondering if Wikipedia is one of the relevant source for university students to use it as a reference. While, there is a number of academic librarians are against of using Wikipedia. Wikipedia, not Wikis. They are two difference means.

  • Wikipedia:
  • Wikipedia (IPA: or () is a multilingual, web-based, free content encyclopedia project. Wikipedia is written collaboratively by volunteers; its articles can be edited by anyone with access to the web site.

  • Wiki:
  • A website or similar online resource which allows users to add and edit content collectively.

Hence, I have decided to take a mini study on this with my friends, Cheng Kian Hong and Yew Kia Liang, Daniel. Both are my postgraduate mates doing in Master of Information Science. Kian Hong is my colleague, from Acquisition Division and Daniel is lecturer from Institute of Technical Education, Singapore.

Abstract:
The discussion in this term paper is compiled from a survey conducted to introduce one of the Internet Communities’ tools to a pool of technical students taking basic Information Technology module in one of the local institute of technology education centre. The main objective of this paper is to identify user interaction issues and to measure the level of initial acceptance, such as perceived usefulness and ease of use for the target users. A total of 40 participants have taken part and also shared their views with regards on their diversity background (including education and interest level) towards the usage of Wikipedia. Using the initial components of Technology Acceptance Model (Davis, 1989) (external variables), and survey instrumental approaches, data were captured and studied. The results show that, even Wikipedia is known as one of the fastest interesting tool in the Internet Communities, there is still room of improvements for the Wikipedia’s practitioners to consider when building, maintaining or contributing information (articles) to the site.
