Can Librarians Go Beyond Blogging – Knowledge Mobilisation

Posted by Hazman Aziz On September - 28 - 20081 COMMENT

Posted ItemsI would said “Yes. Librarians should goes beyond blogging. Because they called themselves information professional on the web.”

Well, one of the job of a librarian is to go beyond blogging to ensure knowledge mobilisation is taking in place. Others might address this as (i) knowledge sharing or (ii) information sharing or (iii) information mobilisation. So, have Hazman Aziz, just an assistant librarian has able to deliver this?

I would said that I am still at the initial stage of this knowledge creation and mobilisation. Citing from a recent conference paper at the Library Association of Singapore 2008, presented by Prof. Schubert et Judy Ng (2008) in their presentation paper, students from library schools should be able to meet the proposed framework in the suggested 3 aspects upon graduation. their conference paper can be downlaod on this url: http://www.las.org.sg/pa_sfjn.pdf.

Well, Prof. Schubert is my professor actually. Great guy, he shared a lot of knowledge with his students. Judy Ng, I am not to sure who she is. But, well, from their presentation, seriously, it needs a lot of passion and interest to deliver such scope, especially understanding today’s rapid technology. The youngsters might have the interests. Even older folks who are well verse in IT programming, they are not into this type of computing cultural. This actually brough us back to a recent article on “Survey shows Gen Y S’poreans tend to job-hop, prefer younger supervisors“. I am not to sure if I have published this posting before. If not, most probably tomorow as it need some editing. Anyway, here is the three points:

  1. The “visible” surface consists of more mature social software application or services such as blogs, wikis, audio blogging (podcasting), media sharing services e.g. YouTube, Flickr), social networking services (e.g. MySpace, Facebook) and data “mash-up”.
  2. Six big ideas that power Web 2.0 which provides a theoretical framework to understand current developments and evaluate future ones. These ideas include (i) individual production and user-generated content, (ii) harness power of the crowd, (iii) data on an epic scale, (iv) architecture of participation, (v) network effects, and (vi) openness.
  3. Web technologies and standards (such as XML, AJAX, Flash, etc.)

And able to go into a process of:

Awareness >> Knowledge >> Experimentation >> Immersion

So, I decided to took up the challenge as a student from the school if I am able to deliver this. Plus, this is also to demonstrate the 4 stages of the process above. It took me 1/2 days to understand and another 1/2 to think of a suitable solution that able to match this processes.

In my blog (Hazman Aziz.com), let’s me present you this blog’s “Feeds Dashboard System”. Basically it pull a number of feeds from the selected social sites that I am participating. For this posting let’s me illustrate and share how the first tab work.

Dashboard

Maybe this would be good for The Facebook Project, which was initiated by Jeff Ginger, a graduate student at the University of Illinois, would be interested to check out. Frankly, I am not too sure if his research team have discovered this approach of presentation and sharing information via Facebook technology. Maybe this could be the answer to: The New Project: Meaning and purpose in everyday life. His team was surveying out:

  1. How does Facebook enter into your everyday life? What do you use it for?
  2. Do you ever use Facebook to intentionally look things up, like people or events?
  3. What do you think about the Newsfeed?
  4. How does Facebook work as a form of communication? What do you like or not like about it?

Anyway, I am here to share with everyone how I do it at Hazman Aziz.com.

if you are a librarian, I am sure that you will be doing these tasks everyday as a subject librarian:

  1. Browse the web, search for article, news videos, podcast, any type of information sources.
  2. Then, you will either blog or write it down on some forum (like sharepoint or wiki). You might even just take it down as a note, email to your client.)
  3. In you note, you will leave some comments or feedback.

Well , things are difference for Hazman Aziz. One of the reasons, he is so engrossed with The Facebook  architecture as well find some friends who would like to do research on The Facebook that he has developed a simple concept tools using the idea from knowledge mobilisation.

This is how he does it.

  1. He installed “Share on Facebook” which is a share bookmarklet on his browser toolbar.
  2. Share on Facebook

  3. How to install this bookmarklet. The instruction can be located on this url.
  4. After that he will search information on the web as per normal. Or check his email, for mailing list, for example like from The Higher Learning Chronicles Daily alerts.
  5. If he found the news/information/new book is worth to share, he will then click the “Share on Facebook”. The Share Bookmarklet will recognize when you share videos and music, making them easy to play within Facebook.
  6. Share on Facebook will prompted you a box to enter your comments. Adjust if you need it. Once down, click the button label “Post”.
  7. Automatically, this posting will be push into your Facebook accounts under the a post item tab.

Share PostedFacebook is more ideal for target marketing depending on the number of friends on your Facebook account. This would not be a preferred solution, in terms of knowledge mobilisation (or marketing). As a librarian, you should share to the community. And in your Facebook account, not all your university student are your friends in Facebook’s account.

So how does I solved this area?

Basically, I used a third party application that does automatically updating news and feed contents for your web site. Here is how I delivered it.

  1. Find your posted, it is called “My Posted Items”
  2. Take down the url of “My Posted Items” – RSS Url.
  3. Either used Google reader or Feed Digest or write your own RSS to content script
  4. Paste the code into your blog.

Now, you Posted Items are shared out of Facebook network. Keep everyone update about your information discovery. Pretty cool, right. This is what we address it knowledge discovery and revelation after mobilisation.

I will place up more stuffs under this tabs technology in the near future. Do feedback if you think that this portion of my site is great. And help me in this survey, so that I can improved.

Do you like the Facebook Tab on my Information (or Knowledge) Concierge Dashboard Tabs section?

Knowledge Management

Posted by Hazman Aziz On September - 25 - 2008Comments Off
  1. What is knowledge management exactly is?
  2. Is it different from information science?

These are the two initial questions that I have been asking myself. “Knowledge Management (‘KM’) comprises a range of practices used by many organisations to identify, create, represent, distribute and enable adoption of what it knows, and how it knows it.” – Wiki. But what does this mean again?

Knowledge Management Life Cycle

To be frank, I build this website based on the life cycle of knowledge management. On my browser, I have a mini dashboard system at the toolbar, where if I found or discovered new stuffs, it is just a simple one click button and share through all my social network sites, such as Facebook, Digg it.  This newly knowledge is then lock and share within my community. Of course, i don’t only stop the knowledge there. If fact I roll it back to my blog as one of the post. You can check out below on the tap.

This are actualy the first stage of knowledge discover, where I am trying tot prove my regime of truth. Follow that, I would the test, build simple code, or hunt systam that able to be integrate into my blog. And this can lead to the determination of knowledge revelation.

Check out the video below.

Facebook’s Posting

Posted by Hazman Aziz On September - 23 - 2008Comments Off

Ever since this whole Internet thing got started, people have been sharing stuff left and right. In the late 90s, music on Napster and flashy chain mail was all the rage. These days, it’s more likely to be a video mashup of someone aging or photos from last night’s party that no one ever remembers being taken.

From a podium into a string of webology stories

Posted by Hazman Aziz On September - 22 - 2008Comments Off

In just over three nights, I have redesigned my website, from the a concept (I used to call), The Library 2.0 Webology Podium into a new theme called The Webology Stories.

What is the reason behind this theme?
Recently, a recruitment company has contacted me and invited me to apply  as a Researcher for a large MNC based in Singapore. I did not apply or on a job hunt right now as I am in the mist of racing my thesis and a couple of research paper. The area of research that the company indicated to me was an interesting and challenging field, that related to information warfare. Well, I gave show them my academic resume on the university website, but they still insist for a pdf copy. Thus, I took me almost a day to redo my resume and update the lists of research and operational projects that I have done since joining the university library.

Should I move on and leave the library science industry – The next question.
When September ends, I will be exactly working also 2 years in the university library. But, it seems like I have worked more than that. I will share with you on the reasons in another posting about my projects in the library. To be frank, I am starting to feel stagnant about career in the library in Singapore. Some of the projects, which I am trying to push, such as building an information concierge model for library outreach, did not really take off. Most of the projects here in Singapore, are still focus on the basic ground level of a information science infrastructure. Worst, some of the projects are reinventing the wheel rather than enhancing it. And worst of all, some legacy systems starting to crash as it not even running on the recommended requirement. This is due to a number of reasons, until I have totally lost my interest in supporting such system and adopted like daily routine work.

Building an Info-Concierge

So what it is down, just reboot and it will be back to normal. And, everything will goes fine.

A couple of reasons and comments:

  1. This concept is too advance and complicated for some of the experienced librarians to adopt.
  2. Technology shifts is too fast and tough to understand.
  3. Too much work and stuffs need to be down if we used this technology – the learning curve is high.
  4. Most of librarians don’t really like to blog and shares stuffs – afraid that they will be pick on.
  5. And, a heaps more tales …

Of course, some of the librarians managed to embark and push off their initiatives. Lately, a number of blogs just recently build and launched. It is great to see librarians launched their subject blogs, but will that measures the level of their success in term of outreach satisfaction.

“Wooo, I have a blog and now I am a famous librarian …”

Would this buy the claim?
This would be my first initial questions to a librarian who love to blog. If a young user (Gen Y) heard this, they will replied, “I also have a blog. So, what is the big deal?”. And, anybody can create a blog either through blogspot or wordpress. Plus, they are free.

Gen Y

In fact, the politicians now too starting to built their blog, especially in Malaysia. In Singapore, I have not yet come across any of our individual politician’s blog yet (if you found one, please share), except for P65 initiated by a political youth party. But, lately, the trend to see Singapore politicians to participate in Facebook’s activities are increasing, sharing their thoughts through Facebook’s notes. Later on, the Singapore’s Berita Minggu (a local Malay paper) shares that Singaporeans’ Islam religious scholars too has started using technology to share their religious point of view and also to outreach into the community about the region. And, there is an implication impact on this such as level of authority, origin of authoritativeness, and regime of truth will be an issue – I will explained this in another posting.

To be frank, I actually have noticed this phenomenal since the last Malaysia’s election. This is actually the impact of the Obama’s US presidential election campaign. A minority politician running the election wishing to win millions of Americans’ hearts to vote for him to be the next US President. The point is, Obama saw this unique business technology opportunities in the areas of Web 2.0, especially the strengths and opportunities. And, if we have the right knowledge and skill, relatively the correct IT skills, we are able to capture the right target audience to support us  in any events that we are co-coordinating. This does not really need a rocket scientists to do this. Many have proven. In fact, those who have proven this does even come from a prestige university education or even reach at their maturity age – in terms of education level. This also illustrates how technology today can be easily adopted and enhanced.

e-politics

So, I took up the challenge to revamp this sites into a place that share The Webology Stories.

How do I deliver this?
If you are interested in these technologies:

  1. Weblog (from Wordpress)
  2. Facebook
  3. Micro-blogging (tools from ping.fm, hellotxt and twitter)
  4. Specialised social site (academia.edu, LinkedIN)
  5. Webfeeds

Obama EverywhereLast but not least, to add in the interactivity, social media site, like YouTube.com and Veoh.com. I will used this freely available technologies, combined it and mashing up and build a unique site that at a glance, this is done by a team of professional web developer. Actually, it is just done by a boy, with a great interest in information science.

I guess with this architecture format I can be the next “Obama Everywhere.” Instead of playing the politician’s field, I will play in the justice of information science, where all the internet researchers will be studying and examining about the Internet Development over a period of time and over the difference society, economy and civilization – The Technology Impact Analysis.

To be frank, I don’t have any research funding, neither from the university, the university library or any organisation to proceed on this initiative. But, I started of this project with just a SGD100, get a hosting server and installed some scripts from Goolge Adsense to cover back the initial cost. The rest, I get from opensource community and it is just a simple job of a “copy & paste” programming. And, today, here is the end results of it. A webology stories. A story that creates an information concierge model for librarians, to outreach into the controlled, structured communities and also uncontrolled and unstructured communities. Of course, I will share this methodologies with you guys on how I build this site in another posting too.

Hence, in a couple weeks down the road, I will share with you on a number of interesting webology stories.

It is a member of the French association Silicon Sentier has taken the first step by presenting a study on social network websites. This study formulates the basic concepts of social networks and also analyses online matchmaking websites and business network websites.

The Facebook Project

Posted by Hazman Aziz On September - 18 - 2008Comments Off

The Facebook ProjectsI was actually trying out two newly social sites for the academia to interact on their areas of research interests, (i) academia.edu & (ii) Graduate Junction. These two sites have a common objective that hopes to catalog all researchers and their interests as paraphrased on the Wired Campus. Well, guess what I have discovered as trying to match my area of research interest. I found another academic staff with the same interest in Facebook, Jeff Ginger, Jenny Ryan and Mim Pavin. It is not surprising that all three of them comes from the sociology background.

Interestingly, Jeff and Jenny are in the team that steer The Facebook Project’s main site. I don’t really have much information on Mim’s work. But, I can see that The Facebook Project has a common objective with my area of interests and what I am trying to push in my academic library. So far, non of my fellow academic librarians is interested in this area, what we address this as a information concierge.

My approached is simple for a layman, for a librarian who wants his/her material to be reach out to the community. This librarian just need to have a facebook account and a weblog (preferably from Wordpress.org). As long as their weblog has RSS feed enable, this is find enough. Each new day, librarians will buy new books for their collection development to growth or discover new reading from their databases. And, usually, librarians practiced to write a short note on this and pubished out as a quartely or weekly newsletter (can be in paper or electornic). But, with weblog, they are able to blast out the shared material in a unique way. And, if this were to integrate with Facebook, this outreach approach would then become a specific target to a specific community.

My point is the knowledge is behind mobilised in a specific way. And the capabilities with the Facebook, there is much more for marketing characters to roll in. Thus, contacts (friends, students, and passer by) will read and then trying to find out the orignal source. This act form a concierge service. (or approach) to increase the usage of your library services. This is also what we call knowledge mobilisation. With the impact of a certain knowledge is mobilsed the percieved of the society changes to adapt to each new forms of knowledge that is being pass down.

Well, what is The Facebook Project about?

“The Facebook Project is a collaborative research effort dedicated to documenting, understanding, and utilizing the social networking service Facebook.com.”

Interesting, I have been trying to find a team of dynamic people in my university to perform such studies. It is actually tough to get the trust. But, recently, local politicians and religious analyst are also starting to play a key role in Facebook, such as share either their experience or knowledge. This is lead to the address in proving the regime of truth. This need lot’s of time for me to read up and study, between the relationship of blogs, social sites and eventually wikis (or maybe knols – or even institutional respository system).

And, I have started a couple of project in Facebook, such as:

  1. Hazman Aziz.com
  2. Commonwealth Secondary School
  3. L’Hexagon French Club Alumni
  4. Bookjetty.com
  5. and, lastly Feeds strories that align with the marketing agenda as a librarian

Hazman Aziz & the Facebook

Well, I will let the night rest. Let’s me ponder how I can contribute or participate in The Facebook Project. Anyway, I have written two articles between facebook and blog. The just need to touch up before releasing to the public.
