Social Network Stats: Facebook, MySpace, Reunion

Posted by Hazman Aziz On February - 2 - 2008

Jeremiah Owyang, Web Strategist and a senior analyst at Forrester Research shares a quick 3 analysis on big giant social utilizes tools on his corporate blog. You can read short below and the stats on his postings.

While for my opinion as a librarian, these are opportunities for the librarians to get down to earth in socialising and getting to know their users well, especially you are in an academic library. Most of the academic libraries their large targeted audiences are between the age of 18-30s years old. Why? They served the communities of undergraduate. I just trying to be practical. Of course, some of you disagreed with me. It is the academic that we should be serving.

But, I think service segmentation such as that is not the right way for academic libraries to growth. That is the brick and mortar way of modeling the operations of your libraries. Today, it is another difference ball games, if you really ponders on some of the reports of social network utilizes stats. I still remembered freshly someone asked me, “Why you choose to studies Information Studies?”

That person “… There is no point doing a master in that as you already have a strong degree?”

I just give that person a smile and replied, “Self satisfaction.” Money would would not buy everything or every knowledge, even you increased my salary. If my heart say I would go, I will. One of the main reasons, I choose information studies, due to the existence and creation of social networks. In the library environment, I am able to play and test around with these tools. At the same time, pushing down, relevant information that my silo has to the targeted users.

So, it is more on creative marketing.

Facebook (http://facebook.com)
The hot talked company Facebook has the highest growth rate, and at Forrester we predict it to achieve the same number of registered users as MySpace in Q4 of 2008, or early 2009 given the current growth rates. The widget platform, which launched summer 2007 has had strong growth as more than 13,000 applications have been launched. Please don’t call this the MySpace killer as each of these sites serves a different demographic, with a different purpose, and different tools. Facebook is more of a ‘lifestyle’ play that allows members to connect to each other.

MySpace (http://myspace.com)
MySpace the largest Social Network in North America maintains a dominant position as media site, primarily aimed at youth, giving them the opportunity to relate to brands and bands, as well as self-express. This site will continue to do with advertisers and marketers. Expect to see more TV and video networks to integrate and work with MySpace, who has the new generation that Generation X was to MTV.

Reunion (http://reunion.com)
This quiet company is profitable already, and is making some strong growth with repeat users that are buying services from the company, as well as advertising. Reunion caters to an older crowd that is seeking to connect with each other from school, childhood, work, or locations. It’s surprising that this company has 32 million registered and is already profitable.

I think that librarians represent the basic technology source for Web 2.0 because they are accustomed to looking for ways to organize information intelligently and make it easy for people to find information.

Thanks for the comments, Susan. I almost forget about this entry that I should edit it grammar, as I created this entry in a between of a journey.

Anyway, I edited. I agreed with your comments, that today’s librarian roles involved the representation of basic technology. It does not need to be Web 2.0. But, they have to be keen enough to deliver an information concierge model in their role.

That’s actually, will lead to my research model call concierge model in library services. I will released the draft notes on my blog soon.
