Rambling Librarians
“… I tell people I love to read, though what I really love are the ideas I get from reading. Tend to favour War stories, Sci Fi and Fantasy — a combination if possible. In June of 2004, I started this blog (ramblinglibrarian.blogspot.com) after a blogger took issue with my remarks that “blogs were platforms for verbal diarrhea”. I decided I didn’’t know what I was talking about. I plunged into the Blogosphere to educate myself.” – Ivan Chew, Singapore

Hazman Aziz, Blogs and Aggregators …

Posted by Hazman Aziz On July - 19 - 2007Comments Off

This would be an interesting entry and pondering entry in my short blog …

Hazman Aziz & Blogs
I have been growing up around weblog structure, playing with them, moduling them to meet different types of business and information needs and desires. A number of friends has comments about my works in their blogs. I just want to share with them …

“I am honours and thankful that you guys to read and appreciate my work … you are the guys that why I am working with passion and making project a milestone ahead.”

While, other have their opinions. I would just like to in form. This blog is a raw entry. What my mind thinks and said, determine my guts to make the decision sending the message to my hand for the action. I do not edit any information or readjust and information that flow in my head.

“… this is a reasearch blog, everything here is raw. What I see, what I think, what I do, is what You get .. and that is what I called it knowledge power”

Aggregators
I would label it as aggregators as for some of the readers that visit my blogs or keep coming back spying to read and finguring out what are my research pattern in. Everyday, from my backend, I always have aggregators (or spider programs) park in my servers. These is sent back to the orginal creators , for some reasons.

If for the good, just read reasons. That is good, at least my work benefit you.

If it for intelligent analysing materials and to report back to your organisation, I am sad to say only Almightly Allah will know the truth and determine the path of my future career undertakings.

The End of Middleware As You Know It

Posted by Hazman Aziz On July - 19 - 2007Comments Off

“Many organizations depend heavily upon centralized, proprietary middleware which increases overall costs while decreasing operating efficiency. This Webcast details the process necessary to shift from this dependency to a distributed SOA as means to reduce costs and increase organizational competency.”Eric Newcomer, CTO, IONA Technologies,
Larry Fulton, Senior Analyst, Forrester Research Inc.
Miguel Chavez, Principal Consultant/Sr. Architectural Expert, CSC

This Webcast will detail how companies are avoiding the performance bottlenecks and single-points-of-failure associated with centralized middleware by adopting a distributed approach to SOA. Attend this Webcast and learn how companies like Zurich Insurance are able to generate greater ROI, minimize IT operating costs and reduce time-to-market for new products and services through successful SOA implementations.

To view this webcas, click here.

My opinion and ponder …

  1. Will library ever benefit from such technology?
  2. Do we have a team of dedicated technologists to analyst the concept of using SOA implementation in the library or information science facilities?
  3. What the level of service technology in terms of this happening to the library environment?

The Modern Librarian: A Role Worth Checking Out

Posted by Hazman Aziz On July - 16 - 2007Comments Off

“Our profession is in need of a serious image change.”

“If everyone knew how smart and funny and dedicated librarians were,” she says, “no library would ever be shut down again.”

Interesting article written by Monica Hesse of the Washington Post.

Personally, what I think about today modern librarians, they all have to be strong and knowledge using information and communication technology. This is they want to be on par with the state of the art information search.

Of course, the traditional skill must left behind, to create a vibrant atmosphere in the activities each library or knowledge cell organised.

Greatest Fear In Entire Life

Posted by Hazman Aziz On July - 16 - 2007Comments Off

I have to make this entry and share with the community. This entry will mark to all the IT professionals and experts across the world who plays around with poetry of codes and codings. I am not against it, in fact, I am supporting the idea.

In any jobs, I took, I demand respect in work. So far, I have earn at least in this. They expect us to pull the call, do the job, but we also expect them to respect our decision. After last week occasion, my fear is getting worst and I keep thinking over the weekend.

Let me ask you a couple of situations,

“…You are in charge of the poetry of codes, one day, the codes changes without your acknowledge? This is not due to system changes or you changes. This is due to someone change your code without your acknowledge. Worst you have spend more than a couple of nights understanding the codes and trying out the modification …”

In the opensource community, codes changes everyday. But opensource programmers have respected with each other practices. They will leave comments, update the documentation system and even give credits to the orginators in their coding. But does opensource cultural and practices exists in Singapore?

That is a big question?

My answer to this situation … Till this day comes to me, that is the day you will see I am working in that particular project and contributing my efforts. This is because if you don’t have respects, I do not want to work with your community.

Let’s me keep pondering … about the future and the worries. Feel free to reply your comments.

Totally Agreed

Posted by Hazman Aziz On July - 15 - 2007Comments Off

I received this newsmail in my mail box two days ago. Only today, I am able to read it.

“… Managing the library’s public computer programs, keeping the equipment operable, and satisfying the patrons using them involves a host of skills and knowledge …”

Yes, I totally agreed with Betha Gutsche’s recent article on “Sustaining Public Access Computing Programs: Technology and Management Competencies “. She address the three factors in this piece of article:

  1. technical skills and

  2. knowledge and

  3. management of public access computing programs.

As for in my case, I am responsiblity for up to 600 Common PCs. Previously, the PCs are just merely program to serve the students’ needs. I am trying to change the concept of Library PCs into a much hybrid information tool. There are space for me to do synchronise promotions, easy accessiblitity, ad-hoc help and other more.

I will just keep ponder, which you guys read the article above.

Tough week, hard week, sometimes I do feel regretted…

Posted by Hazman Aziz On July - 14 - 2007Comments Off

Ya, that is what I want to share out with my community. I am inspired to be an information scientist one day, that is what I am working towards for my in my life, before I reached 35 years old. I know this is not an easy path for me to take, but a satisfaction of life is guarentee there before I close my eyes each day.

But, the forces of life (or forces in a project management) are making harsh life for me. Competitions is always there. If it is from a competitor, it would be fine. I can take it entirely. Life is tough, I still have the next 3.5 years to go, before I am deciding where to move and anchor in my next phase of life.

Hey, looking at the brigh side, I am glad that Ivan and Kevin organised the Media Socialists Meetup #2. I met a couple of new guys, talking and sharing the same passion and interest. In the meeting, we shared:

  1. Development of Library 2.0 (weblogs, tools for research and practices)
  2. Social Communication (Communications like Twitter …)
  3. Catch with our life and interests
  4. Information literacy
  5. Exchange of contacts, ideas and lastly, taking photos.

Hope to have this kind of mini session again. It worth the time to relax and chill after a stress week.
