It is okay

Posted by Hazman Aziz On May - 26 - 2007Comments Off

Since I was a passionate kid in designing and coming out theory how this world works, my friends always laugh at my idea. Soon, I become immune to them. This is one example that how I share and spill my ideas. I meant no harm, but again, Singaporeans need to learn about respecting another person theorical idea.

I guess that is why we are not ready yet to be a learning, research, hyrid hub. Because our own fellow people laughing at us and we depend too much on the States technology and creativity. That is what I have been obeserved across in very organisation I have worked.

We need to learn to respect when someone spilts his raw idea out. Just a simple respect and it will do a job. Anyway, no point bloging this. I guess tomorrow , I will take a bus trip all the way to Trengganu, isolate myself from the work and university life. Away from the internet.

Just me, my buddy, sand, see and air.

To be certify in ITIL

Posted by Hazman Aziz On May - 23 - 2007Comments Off

That was the question that brings up to my mind today. ITIL also known as The Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL®) is a framework of best practice approaches intended to facilitate the delivery of high quality information technology (IT) services. Currently, in the library environment ITIL is quite an important skill, especially handling all the related, relevant technical bakground and enquiries that any library users will be faces.

These enquiries related to the administration of all the element of the library portal module, such as the library content management system, the metalib, SFX search, subject blogs (or rooms), citation bookmark system, the institutional respository system, the A-Z list management system, the library common PC (access terminal), the OPAC system and all the library’s related IT infrastructure.

It is good if a digital librarian would know and be certify in such skills. This will leverage the domain knowledge of the management in handling digital resources.

While IT organizations (in this case, it is the library) seek to implement ITIL to increase operational efficiency, the CEO (the director or chief librarian) is generally interested in investing in projects that return the highest business value. A recent Gartner report indicates that the goal of process improvement is not to implement an ITIL framework, but to increase the quality, efficiency and effectiveness of the services being delivered. Attend this Webcast to learn about a practical framework for quantifying and communicating the business value of ITIL projects to the CEO and ultimately driving business performance improvements.

What is Web 2.0 and Library 2.0

Posted by Hazman Aziz On May - 12 - 2007Comments Off

A couple of friends have been either approached or drop me an email and instant message to find out more about Web 2.0. Indirectly, most of them have been using the applications of web 2.0. In my defination, Web 2.0 related to the authoritive power deploy to user in order to make the system more user friendly. In short, it is a user centric tool.

“… the phrase “Web 2.0″ hints at an improved form of the World Wide Web; advocates suggest that technologies such as weblogs, social bookmarking, wikis, podcasts, RSS feeds (and other forms of many-to-many publishing), social software, Web APIs, Web standards and online Web services imply a significant change in web usage.”

From wikipedia

Plus, they do have a good technological map illustrate web 2.0. Check out below.

Web 2.0 Buzz
Bigger Picture

So, what are the technology aspect from Web 2.0?

I took from Wikipedia again, they just given simple explaination.

The complex and evolving technology infrastructure of Web 2.0 includes server-software, content-syndication, messaging-protocols, standards-based browsers with plugins and extensions, and various client-applications. These differing but complementary approaches provide Web 2.0 with information-storage, creation, and dissemination capabilities that go beyond what the public formerly expected of websites.

A Web 2.0 website may typically feature a number of the following techniques:

So, what about Library 2.0?

Frankly, it is the same, just that most of these applications are deployed in a library environment. And, they are all for Library users.

Hazman, has you built or invovled in any one of them?

Of course, dude. Last week, I just launch a Survey Solution and EFM System for my subject librarians, operational librarians and library support staffs to do it. In this system, my users will have the power to design survey or electronic forms form a web based application and event share it with their staffs, plus more to that.

I will be launching out soon an open access journal library for the open source community to benefit in their research. Especially when they need to write documentations and articles for their open conferences. You want to know more, click here.

I also have done and improve my library’s bookmarking system. I will be doing a bigger scale project deploying 2.0 browsers into current Library’s common image and today OPAC image

And, there is more …

It was good session that I have at SMU with Bain sharing their information services practices. Definately, I am going on a right track towards academic careers. At Bain, they reached their staffs through desktop technology with all the information needs. And, that is exactly what I am going to implement within the next three month. Reaching all the NTU Library users through desktop. But, since I am doing this alone, I will do this at stages.

Another  surprising moments, I got to know better with two my newly work mates. Both shared the same dream with me.  I guessed the three of us can work together strategically and maybe down in 6 months time, we are able to present and publish our very first research paper at a regional conference.

Bookmarklet System

Posted by Hazman Aziz On May - 11 - 2007Comments Off

I was noted that another academic library was interested in one of my initiatives project, bookmarklet system for library environment. Here are some details,

“… explored the development of a bookmarklet system to aid access to library resources in an effective and efficient manner. Generally defined in most research articles, a bookmarklet is a JavaScript code that can be stored as a URL within a bookmark in most popular web browsers or within hyperlinks on a web page. It may also be known as favelets or favourites on other web browsers, such as Internet Explorer.

The design of bookmarklets can be saved and used like a normal page bookmark. Hence, it is a simple “one click” process and can be added as a substantial functionality to the current browser. Bookmarkets are safer than any other traditional software for a couple of reasons, such as simplicity and no installation requirements.”

I have redesigned one proxy bookmarklet and one ISBN bookmarklet. This time round I make sure the important in the element of users friendliness is there. Including the instructions too. You want to find out more, you can click here.

For your information, I did not do this bookmarklet alone. Althought it is just a small JavaScript code. For the proxy bookmarklet, it was an enhancement from the existing codes, and while for the ISBN, with the help from Jeffry A. Young from OCLC. (click here to view more) And, for more information can be found on Jon Udell’s website.

The next step, I will integrated this system into the new image for an Academic Library to benefits. I will address this new image, image 2.0. Slowly, it will build up and form Library 2.0 for academic library to benefit.

Going on the right track

Posted by Hazman Aziz On May - 10 - 2007Comments Off

I am going on the right academic track to achieve a close goal to be a lecturer. I just learnt that my newly appointed Provost has the same interests as I am. That is the interests to build an open access journals or database, especially for academic institution. There are a couple of reasons why an academic should has an open access journals. And on wikipedia, there is a brief discussion, “open access to scholarly research is important to the public for a number of reasons.”

  •  a right to access the results of what tax payers have funded
  • to encourage open sharing knowledge (democratic mode of learning)
  • speeds research progress, productivity, and knowledge translation
  • students can gain the information literacy skills critical for the knowledge age

Hrmm, gain information literacy skills. I am not only able to allow students to gain this skills, but I am able to take advantage, strategise and utilise this information literacy tools. The prove is here in this Myspace, where I share my ideas with the community.

One definate answers that I am aware about Open Access and Hazman is these points elaborated in this article from Chen Chi Chang (2006):

Strengths:

  • Low operating cost. The scholar publishing model transforms into open access business model; the most important success factor is the lower operating cost. Without doing the authorisation control the publisher can save the subscriber management cost.
  • Improved impact factor. The open access journals are scholarly, peer-reviewed, full text and accessible without cost. The policy also aims at making the published research more visible and accessible. The peer-review process will guarantee the quality of the journal, and making the published research more visible might improve the impact factor.
  • Positive attitude of digital archives: digital archives have become increasingly important in this age, and the open access state of permanent preservation helps people realise the importance of open access.
