Wikis (Another Review Paper ?)

Posted by Hazman Aziz On February - 25 - 2007Comments Off

WikipediaI can’t image that! I just about to finish and complete a discussion paper on the User Interaction Issues on Wikipedia and now I have to start another review paper on Collaboration tools on Wikipedia. Please give me some air to breadth. I spend my Chinese New Years, trying to crack my brains to writing the discussion paper.

Anyway, this review paper, I guess I will be writing it alone as it is only a four to five paper paper. Maybe, I will took as two case studies both from open sources for a software production house to employ such practice. Before, it slips off my mind, this paper have to be written from the perspective of the information management.

Which are the two case studies?

  1. Gallery Development Documents:
    http://codex.gallery2.org/Development
  2. Documentation of phpMyVisites:
    http://www.phpmyvisites.us/documentation/Main_Page

Both of these two sites began off as a home based (student) project. Today, these two project have stretched out in the information industry due to it unique architecture that build in the project’s concept. Collaboration has taken place, information has been exchanged. Today, they become one of the powerful arising from no man island.

How do they do it? You have to ask them.

I am only going to cover how the collaboration have taken place using another tool, called Wikis and how web developer (especially the open source industry) have taken this as an advantage. This paper will give an idea for corporate organisation to adopted such system for their organisation to evolve and learn.

“… Look like I will not have another week to rest or sleep.”

Towards Library 2.0

Posted by Hazman Aziz On February - 25 - 2007Comments Off

In less than an hour, I have uploaded two systems up to this server.

Library 2.0The main idea of installing this system is as test bed (playground) for me to implement library 2.0 into any library service. Frankly, which I believe, the library can fully utilise these two software free for the daily operation. They are widely supported by the opensource community. All the library need to do, hired a digital resource librarian or an IT background staffs, who know about the element of web development (such as php, html, javascript, xml and asp.net). That will do the join to migrate you library up to library 2.0.

What can a Web Site Analytic System do for your library?

  • Precise visitor statistics over a period of time (day/week/month/year).
  • Visitor Frequency: new visitors, regular (known) visitors, and how often visitors view the web site.
  • Management of web site statistics and all file types (PDF, Image, etc.).
  • Web site page classification available (by groups, by subgroups, etc.).
  • Visitor Analysis: Statistics for pages where visitors leave the web site and for pages where the visitors enter the web site.
  • Geographical Statistics: Classification by continent/country (interactive world map).
  • and a lot more

What can a Photo Management System (Galleri) do for your library?

  • Image Magick or NetPBM – pick which image manipulation package you have on your server or want to use.
  • Auto Rotate Images – Gallery can look at information in pictures from digital cameras and automatically rotate them as needed.
  • Image Quality and Size Defaults – You can limit the quality and size of images so that when images are uploaded, Gallery will resize them to save space.
  • Main Gallery Page Settings – The configuration wizard contains all of the settings for how the main Gallery page looks and acts including showing or hiding the album tree, search engine, or album owner, and what frames to show around albums.
  • … and heaps more.

Do check it out and implement this at your library. If you have any enquiries, please feel free to drop an email. In addition to that, I will share with you on some ideas on I will implement this open source tools into your library (or school)’s environment.
